iDEAL - the most widely used payment method in the Netherlands

For online and mobile payments

What is iDEAL?

Each day, 1.5 million iDEAL payments are made. For many Dutch people, this online bank transfer is the most trusted online payment method. It offers online retailers a payment guarantee and a conversion rate of 93%.

How does it work?
The payment is started from a payment page or checkout, and is completed in the customer’s own bank environment. In fact, it is an easier version of a bank transfer, because all payment details have been pre-filled automatically. Another important feature of iDEAL is that both the payer and payee are notified immediately whether payment has been successful. Payment is irreversible. This is called a direct guaranteed payment method.

iDEAL was founded in 2005 in the Netherlands to enable customers to make online payments through their own bank. It’s an initiative of several Dutch banks. The payment product is administered by Currence, which is affilliated with De Betaalvereniging (Payment Association).

Offer iDEAL on your payment page

An iDEAL payment is nearly always processed by a Payment Service Provider. In 2005, Buckaroo became the very first supplier of this Dutch payment product. Nowadays, we’re still one of the largest non-banking processor.

Buckaroo’s payment software provides smooth and secure communication between the systems of the bank, the consumer and the seller. Thus, Buckaroo customers can go live in just a few hours. You do not need to obtain a security certificate ‒ we’ve already got one ‒ but we do want to get to know you better before we start processing payments.

How does iDEAL work?

Do you offer iDEAL on your payment page? Then consumers can make online payments through their own bank: ABN AMRO, ASN Bank, Bunq, Handelsbanken, ING, Knab, Rabobank, RegioBank, SNS Bank, Triodos Bank or Van Lanschot. The payer’s bank can differ from the seller’s bank. To make a payment, the consumer chooses his or her own bank from the list.

The payment takes place within the internet banking environment of the consumer’s bank and is completed with a confirmation code by means of e.dentifier, App, QR code or text message (this confirmation code differs per bank). The payment is processed immediately and can be viewed realtime at Buckaroo Plaza.

iDEAL payment link

You can also use iDEAL for post payments. For example by means of a digital bill. The iDEAL payment link is a URL that directs you to a payment page on which you can make an online payment. This URL can be displayed, but is often hidden behind a pay button. Similar to pay buttons in webshops. At Buckaroo Plaza, you can create your own digital bill with a pay button or payment link.

The iDEAL payment link can also be sent by text message. Through a shortened link, the buyer is directed  to a payment page on which he or she can make an online payment. The payment request is designed according to the look and feel of your business brand. The bill as well as the payment page provides a clear description of what you’re paying for. The link can also be used in payment reminders.

Your own iDEAL QR code

Of all iDEAL payments, 70% is made by mobile phone, for example by a payment link or Tikkie. But you can also make a mobile payment while shopping from your desktop. By using an iDEAL QR code during checkout. With your smartphone, you can scan the QR code from the screen in order to complete the payment. A code can also be attached to bills or payments in a shop or at a trade show.  Thus, online as well as offline payment requests can be completed by mobile phone. Just like with payment links, you can also create an iDEAL QR at Buckaroo Plaza.
